What is your response to Naomi Campbell saying Gisele is the only real supermodel left??

officialstevenmeisel2:

I agree. Everyone in the industry refers to successful models as ‘supermodels’ including myself, but the term supermodel is not accurate. Many of the models today we deem as supermodels aren’t, I actually agree with the term models.com uses calling them ‘Industry Icons’ because really that is what they are, all of us in the industry idolize certain models because they are super to us, we know their work and who they are, but its just easier saying supermodel. Gisele is the last to have the actual impact a supermodel has, being that she is highly successful across all boards of fashion and a household name.

Today is vastly different than 20 years ago due to the wave of social media, so models today have much more notoriety like Cara Delevingne or Candice Swanepoel considering that Instagram and Victoria’s Secret are so highly publicized, but being highly well known does not equate being a supermodel. Though that does sound hypocritical considering one main component of being a supermodel is being a household name, but considering the era we are in it is much easier for a model to be a household name than in the 90’s, or the 70’s.

I mean think of when Gisele came about, she was EVERYONES muse. Valentino, McQueen, Meisel I mean she made an impact. I can’t think of many models since then [and there are a few] who have had such an impact on an industry than she has. Some say that Mariacarla Boscono is the last supermodel but that’s an entirely different discussion but to me its Gisele definately.
